Portrait photo series

About this series:
WoManly is a photo series exploring gender expression using a female model. It isn't so much about having a young woman taking on poses we associate with men, but rather something more intrinsic which we call 'masculinity' but which can be found in women as much as men (as the inverse is true for 'feminity'). I believe it's in the eyes, the muscles of the face, the way they hold their head and shoulders. We ornament ourselves with clothes, jewellery, makeup, tattoos, and hairstyles to better communicate the things we intrinsically feel about ourselves and often assimilate with the expected adornments so as to blend in and make our life easier. However, since I believe these are simply external methods of communicating ourselves to the world, I wanted to take the focus off of these things with this series so as to pull the attention toward this inner self. I did this by making the background engulf her clothes and hair, be it by using black on black or crumpled on crumpled. All that should be left is an impression, a glare, a posture or an expression.
